Canada 1953 Queen Elizabeth II 'Wilding' Issue
Canada · 1953 · 2¢
This definitive stamp features the first portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to appear on Canadian postage, known as the 'Wilding' portrait, after photographer Dorothy Wilding. The Queen is depicted facing right, wearing the George IV State Diadem, against a solid dark green background. This design became a familiar sight on mail across Canada for several years.
Issued shortly after her accession to the throne in 1952, this stamp marked the beginning of the Elizabethan era in Canadian philately, replacing the previous King George VI definitives.
