Canada 12 Pence Black
Canada · 1851 · 12 Pence
This iconic stamp, known as the 'Black Empress', features the Chalon Portrait of a young Queen Victoria. It was printed on laid paper by the firm of Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Edson of New York. The intricate engraving and simple, elegant design make it one of the most famous and sought-after stamps in Canadian philately.
Issued by the Province of Canada in 1851, this was one of the first postage stamps produced in the country. Its high denomination of 12 pence (one shilling) was intended for postage on letters to distant destinations like Newfoundland or the British West Indies, but it saw very little use.
