Canada, 1860 17c Blue Jacques Cartier
Canada · 1860 · 17c
This stamp features a portrait of Jacques Cartier, the French explorer who claimed what is now Canada for France. The design, based on a portrait by François Riss, also includes a sailing ship in the background, representing his voyages. It was issued as part of the 1859-1864 decimal currency series.
Issued shortly after the Province of Canada adopted decimal currency in 1858, this stamp was intended to pay the single-letter rate to France via British packet. It is one of the classic definitive issues of early Canada.
