Brazil 1844 "Bull's Eye" 60 Réis
Brazil · 1844 · 60 Réis
This stamp is part of the second series of stamps issued by Brazil, known as the "Inclinados" or "Slanted Numerals." The design features the numeral '60' for the 60 Réis denomination, set within an ornate, engine-turned oval frame. Like its predecessor, the famous "Bull's Eye," this issue does not depict a monarch or national symbol, a characteristic of Brazil's earliest postage.
Issued just one year after Brazil's groundbreaking first stamps, this series continued the world's second national postage system. These stamps were used to prepay postage on mail within the vast Brazilian Empire during the reign of Emperor Pedro II.
