Brazil, 1843 "Bull's Eye" Black
Brazil · 1843 · 60 Réis
This stamp is part of the famous "Olho de Boi" or "Bull's Eye" series, the first stamps issued in Brazil and the second in the world after Great Britain's Penny Black. The design features a large numeral '60' within an ornate oval frame, printed in black. The simple, numeral-focused design was chosen to avoid depicting a living monarch, a sensitive issue at the time.
Issued under Emperor Dom Pedro II, the Bull's Eye series marked Brazil as a pioneer in postal reform, adopting the prepaid postage system just three years after its invention.
