Brazil "Bull's Eye" First Postage Stamp
Brazil · 1843 · 30 réis
This is the first postage stamp issued by Brazil, known as the "Olho de Boi" or "Bull's Eye." The design features a large numeral '30' for the denomination within an ornate, oval frame, without the portrait of a monarch. This series was the second in the world to be issued for an entire country, following Great Britain's Penny Black.
Issued under Emperor Dom Pedro II, the Bull's Eye stamps established Brazil as a pioneer in postal reform, adopting the new system of prepaid postage just three years after its invention.
