Brazil 1843 'Bull's Eye' Postage Stamp
Brazil · 1843 · 30 réis
This is the first postage stamp issued by Brazil, known as the 'Olho de Boi' or 'Bull's Eye'. The design features a large numeral '30' within an ornate, oval frame, without any depiction of a monarch or national symbol. It was part of a series of three values (30, 60, and 90 réis) printed in black on yellowish paper.
Issued on August 1, 1843, the Bull's Eyes were the first stamps issued in the Americas and the second in the world, following Great Britain's Penny Black. Their issuance marked a significant step in postal reform for the Empire of Brazil.
