North West Pacific Islands Overprints on Australian Stamps
North West Pacific Islands · 1915 · Various
This series consists of definitive stamps of Australia, featuring portraits of King George V and the iconic 'Kangaroo and Map' design, which were overprinted with "N. W. PACIFIC ISLANDS". The overprint was applied to existing Australian postage to serve the territories occupied during World War I.
These stamps were issued for use in the former German New Guinea, which was captured and occupied by Australian forces in 1914 at the outset of World War I. The overprints represent a transitional period of military administration before the territory became a League of Nations mandate.
