Australia First Kangaroo and Map Series
Australia · 1913 · Various (½d to £2)
This definitive series, known as the 'Kangaroo and Map', was Australia's first national postage stamp design. The central image features a kangaroo standing on a bed of grass, superimposed over a map of the Australian continent. The design is framed with ornate scrollwork and includes the country name 'AUSTRALIA' at the top and the denomination at the bottom.
Issued in 1913, this series replaced the individual stamps of the Australian colonies, symbolizing the new Commonwealth of Australia which was federated in 1901. It remained in use for over three decades.
