Collection of 100 Stamps from Australian States
Australian States · 1900 · Various
This is a collection of 100 different stamps from the various Australian States that existed prior to the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia. The designs typically feature portraits of Queen Victoria, state coats of arms, or local fauna like kangaroos and swans. These stamps represent the individual postal systems of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania.
Before the federation of Australia in 1901, each of the six self-governing British colonies operated its own postal service and issued its own stamps. These 'States' issues were replaced by Commonwealth of Australia stamps starting in 1913.
