Australian States Postage Stamp

Australia · 1850 · 1d

This stamp, known as the 'Sydney View', is widely considered the first stamp issued in Australia. The design features an allegorical representation of Industry seated on a bale, with a pick and shovel, overlooking Sydney Harbour. The Latin motto 'SIC FORTIS ETRURIA CREVIT' (Thus strong Etruria grew) is inscribed below.

Issued by the colony of New South Wales in 1850, this stamp predates the federation of Australia. It marks the beginning of postal history in the region, replacing the complex system of prepayment in cash.
