This set of four stamps, issued in 1970, commemorates four distinguished Australians. The designs feature portraits of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (aviator), Henry Lawson (writer), Sir John Monash (soldier and engineer), and Dame Mary Gilmore (poet and journalist). The stamps were printed using the photogravure process by the Note Printing Branch of the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Issued during a period of growing national identity, this set celebrated key figures who made significant contributions to Australia's culture, science, and military history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
