A green stamp featuring the double-headed imperial eagle of Austria, surrounded by 'K.K. ZEITUNGS-STEMPEL' and 'EIN KREUZER' at the bottom. It is shown on a newspaper fragment with a Milan postmark.
Issued by the Austrian Empire in 1853, this newspaper tax stamp was used to levy duties on foreign newspapers entering the empire. This example was used on a newspaper sent from France to Milan, then part of Austrian Lombardy-Venetia.
