Austria 1918 Coat of Arms Overprint on Newspaper Stamp

Austria · 1918 · 2 Heller

This stamp is an overprint on an earlier newspaper stamp featuring the profile of Mercury. The overprint consists of the new Austrian coat of arms, a single-headed eagle with a mural crown, holding a hammer and sickle, signifying the union of workers and peasants in the new republic.

Issued in December 1918, this was one of the first stamps of the First Austrian Republic (Deutschösterreich), created following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of World War I.
