Umm al-Qiwain 1964 First Definitive Issue, Sheikh Ahmed II bin Rashid Al Mu'alla
Umm al-Qiwain · 1964 · 10 nP
This definitive stamp features a portrait of Sheikh Ahmed II bin Rashid Al Mu'alla, the ruler of Umm al-Qiwain from 1929 to 1981. The design is framed with traditional Islamic geometric patterns, and the country's name is inscribed in both Arabic and English script. This was part of the first set of stamps issued by the emirate for postal use.
Issued before the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, this stamp represents the postal independence of the individual Trucial States. These early issues were primarily created for the philatelic market to generate revenue for the small emirate.
