The design features a portrait of Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was the ruler of Abu Dhabi at the time. Issued on March 30, 1964, this set marked Abu Dhabi's establishment of its own postal service, replacing the British postal agencies that had previously operated in the Trucial States. This was a significant step towards asserting its sovereignty before the formation of the UAE in 1971.
